It was in mid-August 2022 when Dan and I took our first vacation together in over a year! We spent it with our good friends Brent & Ami, who live just south of Flagstaff. Whenever we hang out with those guys, we take day trips to check out places like Wupatki and Walnut Canyon. This time, we took a drive north 2.5 hours/140 miles to Horseshoe Bend.
It was hot. I knew it would be, but I hadn’t really concerned myself with the weather warnings on the NPS website. I live in Tucson after all. But it was bloody freaking pass-out-if-you-don’t-find-shade hot. We survived, thanks to the water we carried and the chance bit of shade under a boulder by the rim of the bend. You’ll see my overheated face in those pics.
A little triple digit heat didn’t mar the fabulous trip. We drove through the gorgeous Painted Desert, by the incomparable Vermillions Cliffs to get to the City of Page, where we gazed upon – and took a bunch of photo of – Horseshoe Bend.
Looking at millions of years of Colorado River-cut sandstone is humbling and centering.
Please enjoy.
