June 18, 2009 By Jamie Manser Leave a Comment

(Published by Tucson Weekly on June 18, 2009.) Former Downtown Tucsonan employees Dave Olsen and Jamie Manser (both former Tucson Weekly employees) have teamed up to begin publication of Zócalo, a magazine dedicated to arts and entertainment. "Our goal is to be a family-friendly publication that highlights the town's thriving arts, music and entertainment offerings," said Manser via e-mail. "There is a lot going on in this burg, and we'd like to be what people pick up for a snapshot of … [Read more...]

Run Away & Join The Circus!

(This article was published by Zocalo Magazine summer, 2009.) The hippest summer camp going this June has got to be the First Annual Circus Camp. Where else in town can a kid learn to stilt walk and spin poi? The concept has been knocking around for years, with the time realized now in a partnership between Rhythm Industry and Tucson Circus Arts. Any album with talk of fleeing to Mexico on its first track always does me right. Jim Cox provides gravely and warm vox and sings songs of love lost, love gained, friends moving on and booze. My favorite, hands down, is “Stellar Dope,” a heart wrenching ballad with really tasty licks by lead guitarist Neal … [Read more...]

Naim Amor “Soundtracks III”

(This article was published by Zocalo Magazine summer, 2009.) The très bon Amor releases his instrumental record at Plush on June 5, with cuts that are extremely – guess what? – cinematic. Opening with “West,” aptly titled, the track has the clip clop beat of horse’s trot; “Precious Second” and “Reminds Me of a Song” could both be in the Twin Peaks cache, fitting in with the dark drama of the series. “Keeylocko” is wild and devious; “Klezmer Muzak” has a freakin cool 1980s dance beat … [Read more...]
