1st picture: commemorative plate for Elsie and Elmer’s 25th anniversary, the silver anniversary, hence the wedding bell and silver trim.
2nd picture: souvenir plate from the Ashland Shakespeare festival. We were there in ’63, but we didn’t buy this. I suspect Linnea Pearson, Elsie’s sister, well-loved Aunt Linnay, might have bought this as a gift for her sister.
Pictures three and four: these are relics of a set of dishes used by Elsie’s parents, John’s maternal GPs. The one with the chip is one I rescued, after Elsie threw it away. I liked the birds, and I knew it was part of John’s ancestral heritage.
Pictures five, six, seven: these are remaining pieces from the set of dishes purchased at Red Owl Grocery, just before Christmas, 1971. All had reproductions of Currier and Ives prints. Bought because we had the extended family for Christmas eve dinner at the schoolhouse we owned then. Originally there were eight pieces. Most of the plates and the gravy boat were smashed in the Great Cupboard Collapse of May 31, probably in 2015 or 16. (Story available by request.) I think the original creamer and sugar bowl are in the Hoosier cupboard in Birch House.
Picture eight: Remaining plate of four, purchased in Carmel or Monterey, probably Carmel, in l962 or 3. We used these in the Japanese-style dining room we built out of half our carport, at the house on Huckleberry Hill in Pacific Grove.
Picture Nine: I believe this was a commemorative gift for Elsie, when she retired as a teacher in the Little Falls public schools.
Picture Ten: This plate came with the Japanese plates, bought at the same auction.
Picture Eleven: The same Christmas for which we had bought the Currier and Ives set, Elsie had brought along her Christmas gift–a boxed set of these dishes. (The Rylander women were always sort of gently upgrading my tableware.) I know there was general laughter, and she returned the dishes. How I wound up with one plate, I forget. Maybe that was part of the upgrade nudging.
Picture Twelve: This was part of the senior Rylander’s set, like the surviving sugar bowl and creamer shown in the last set. Same pattern.
Picture Thirteen: I really don’t know. It’s obviously old. Elsie’s? Her parents, or Elmer’s? But I know it was part of what got divvied up among the sisters and me, after she died. That sort of round-robin giveaway.
